Star Of Cocaine Cowboys 2 Talks To Jim & Jade
MIAMI (CBS4) ― The 2006 drug documentary “Cocaine Cowboys” took viewers into the violent, deadly and not-so-underground world of drug trafficking in Miami in the late seventies and eighties. Director Billy Corben’s sequel, “Cocaine Cowboys 2: Hustlin’ with the Godmother” focuses on the lives of “The Godmother” Griselda Blanco, and her former lover Charles Cosby. Both Cosby and Corben talked about the film with Jim and Jade Thursday morning.
Griselda Blanco, aka The Godmother, was responsible for bringing in more drugs and more crime to South Florida’s streets than anyone else at the time. She led a $40 million cocaine business, and Charles Cosby was her lover.
Director Billy Corben says fans of the first film wanted to know more about The Godmother.
“It’s a true sequel. It literally picks up where Cocaine Cowboys left off. We got thousands of emails and MySpace messages and Facebook messages from people all over the world who wanted to know more about this particular character, this particular thread from the movie,” said Corben.
The documentary sequel focuses on Oakland, California, which is where Cosby grew up and where crack cocaine was all the rage in the early eighties. The film follows Cosby, a small-time street hustler, and his rise through the ranks of Griselda Blanco’s organization, their relationship and eventually their falling out.
Blanco had four sons but only the youngest is still alive. He is named Michael Corleone, after the fictional character from the film The Godfather. It’s believed her other three sons were assassinated after being deported to Colombia.
Griselda was also deported to Colombia in 2004 after she spent nearly 20 years in prison.
Cosby told Jim and Jade that he is once again in contact with her only living son.
“Last night at the premiere, her son, Michael Corleone was my special guest. Griselda, she’s a Christian now so there’s no fear there.”
He hopes to get back in touch with her soon. “Hopefully I’ll be able to talk to her by the end of the week but I’ve been in contact with her son, Michael Corleone, for the past three weeks,” said Cosby.
When asked how he survived living a life of crime, Cosby responded, “I survived the game. I would equate it to luck. You’re not going to find a person who was in my position to be able to sit on your couch in the free world and tell this story. I was partly smart but more lucky than smart.”
“Cocaine Cowboys 2: Hustlin’ with the Godmother” is a straight-to-DVD sequel available on July 29th.
